Ruth won the election and was named party leader on November 4, 2011. The Conservatives surpassed the Labour Party as the second-largest party in the Scottish Parliament in 2016. Davidson stepped down as leader in August 2019, shortly after Boris Johnson was elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Jackson Carlaw succeeded her, and Douglas Ross took her place. After leading the party in Holyrood for several months, Davidson resigned from the Scottish Parliament in the 2021 election. She was made a life peer in the House of Lords in 2021.

Davidson was widely regarded as a pretty successful leader, particularly in 2016 and 2017. She is regarded as a centrist ideologically.
