Ruth won the election and was named party leader on November 4, 2011. The Conservatives surpassed the Labour Party as the second-largest party in the Scottish Parliament in 2016. Davidson stepped down as leader in August 2019, shortly after Boris Johnson was elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Jackson Carlaw succeeded her, and Douglas Ross took her place. After leading the party in Holyrood for several months, Davidson resigned from the Scottish Parliament in the 2021 election. She was made a life peer in the House of Lords in 2021.
Davidson was widely regarded as a pretty successful leader, particularly in 2016 and 2017. She is regarded as a centrist ideologically. In the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, she voted for Scotland to remain a part of the United Kingdom. In the years since 2014, she has continued to appeal to referendum “No” voters on that premise, as well as her opposition to a second vote. In the 2016 EU membership referendum, she voted to keep the UK in the EU.
